Dr. Atya Kapley, is a distinguished Indian environmental geneticist and ex Chief Scientist at the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), Nagpur. Her studies extend into soils treatment contaminated by pesticides (like atrazine) and the impact of anaerobic digestion on organic waste and larger hydrological health.
Her work aligns with the circular economy. She has pioneered methods for the valorization of oily sludge—essentially turning hazardous waste back into recoverable oil fractions—and has researched using natural matrices like coconut coir to improve sewage treatment.
She is Vice President (Asia & Pacific region) for the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD). She is a strong advocate for women in STEM and has received numerous accolades, including the Women Scientist Award from the Biotech Research Society of India.
